What is the helmet of salvation? And why do we need it? It protects our minds from assaults by the Accuser to try to undermine our confidence in the salvation our lives depend upon. Ever watched the Olympic swimmers? They have very tight-fitting skull caps.

That’s what we need, spiritually speaking, in order to swim our best in the rough seas of inward and outward turbulence. Since both Ephesians 6:17 and 1 Thessalonians 5:8 call attention to it, I want to give you what I believe the Lord has given me as “air-tight” protection against the foul breath of the Accuser.

1st Question: What is the gospel?

It is the power of salvation (Romans 1:16)! Knowing what the Good News really is, keeps it fresh and powerful. There are three must know scriptures: John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9, and 2 Corinthians 5:19.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 ESV

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:19 ESV

Each is a one sentence description of the best news you could ever hope to hear concerning your salvation. Put a sticky tab on them, highlight them, and make sure you can rejoice in them—at a moment’s notice. When the enemy comes Helmet of Salvationcalling, if he can point to any spiritual dirt on you, you will need to run to these “home bases.” They all point to our salvation being anchored in God’s grace and our faith in Christ’s work.

2nd Question: Do I have “saving faith?”

Since I am saved “by faith” how can I know for sure that I have “saving faith?” This also is a must know because the enemy can be relentless at accusing us of not really being saved due to the way we are thinking, feeling, or behaving during times of testing and trial. Again the Lord showed me three scriptures to nail my confidence down using His Word: in addition to John 3:16, see Romans 10:9 and Romans 10:13.

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved… For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:9, 13 ESV

Jesus says in John 3:16 that it is by believing alone that we “will not perish, but have eternal life.” “OK,” the enemy says, “But you must not really have the right kind of believing, otherwise you wouldn’t be such a worthless sinner…”

The Lord through Paul counteracts this attack by defining the right kind of believing for us: “If you can confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.” In other words “saving faith” is believing that Jesus really is Lord and that He died and rose again (for our sins). Simple?

Then he caps it off by saying four verses later: “All who call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” Just make sure that you continue in calling upon Him, no matter what your need may be, and you definitely shall be saved. God wants to save everyone, but He will not save anyone who doesn’t want to be saved by Him. That’s why calling on His name is essential to salvation. You don’t have a problem with that, do you?

The Good News is simple: Heaven is easy to gain entry to and assurance about! Otherwise, the gospel wouldn’t be very good news, would it? Once the Lord showed me these verses I have never had any trouble keeping the helmet of salvation fitting tightly in place.

Therefore  take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in  the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm… and take  the helmet of salvation. Ephesians 6:13 and 17 ESV
