Are you ready for what is coming? I have a concern, growing ever stronger inside me as the US economy continues to fall deeper into debt, and it is this: If so many people have been finding it hard to trust God and live in peace, under our present conditions of relative prosperity and stability, what will become of them when we go over Niagara Falls?
You don’t have to be a prophet to see that the biggest debt bill in the history of the world (ours) can’t be put off forever. It seems that the average person is already stressed to the max just by ordinary life. How will we bear up, if (when) events really shake things up?
This question clearly exercised Jeremiah. He looked around and saw the conditions oppressing Israel and how the people were struggling. He knew his own struggles with trust and despair. He also knew, as a prophet, what was coming down the road. I believe that it was into this area of his own need that the Lord spoke to Him:
If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, Then how can you contend with horses? And if in the land of peace, In which you trusted, they wearied you, Then how will you do in the floodplain of the Jordan? Jeremiah 12:5 NKJV
This passage has been ringing in my ears for years. The Lord has been speaking through it to me about my own need to carry all of the issues of my heart to Him and convert them back into trust, so that I can get ready for “the flood” that’s coming. Now I am passing it on to you.
Don’t get me wrong—I am not a pessimist. I thoroughly believe the magnificent promise of Romans 8:28 that all things are being made to work for good. But I am also a Biblical realist: God let’s stuff happen! The great things is that the trouble that He lets happen right now will prepare us for other troubles coming down the road, if we use it to increase our faith-ability to trust Him and be guided by Him.
So, what is your plan? Will you stress out? Or will you trust—at a new levels? Will you worry yourself half to death, or will you listen and obey—at new levels? Wise people look ahead and prepare for what is coming. In this case the best preparation possible comes through learning how to live stress free today.
I want you to know that no matter what may come our way, our God can help us stand, walk and even run with Him through it! But if we want to be able to run with tomorrow’s “horses,” we will have to learn how to live with today’s “footmen.”
At Forerunners4Him and Healing Streams we are dedicated to helping others learn how to convert stress and emotional pain, etc., back into trust! It is not easy, but it is great equipping for enjoying life—even when life becomes a flood plain.
